Sloppy Joe
Aug 24, 2024Here’s what you need:
- 1 lb. of ground meat (beef or turkey)
- 1 medium red bell pepper, finely chopped
- 1 medium sweet onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-2 Tbsp. Olive Oil
- 8 oz. tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 to 4 Tbsp. brown sugar (depending on the sweetness you're looking for)
- 2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp. prepared mustard
- 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp. onion powder
- Salt and Pepper to taste
- Hamburger buns
Heat the olive oil in a medium sauce pan over medium heat. Add the chopped pepper and onion. Sauté until it softens a bit, about 5-7 minutes.
While the vegetables cook, make your sauce.
In a medium bowl, add the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and seasonings (see notes below). Mix until well combined and brown sugar is dissolved. Set aside.
Add sauce to the meat and simmer on low for 10-15 minutes until heated through and thickened a bit, stirring occasionally.
Serve on a hamburger bun and enjoy!
**NOTES:
- I used B. T. Leigh's "The Clevelander" sauce in place of the mustard
- I used 1 1/2 tsp. of B. T. Leigh's "Somethin' for Everything" in place of the garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper
